Gambro opened its first dialysis clinic in Lund in 1991. The clinic activities expanded under the name Gambro Healthcare and by 2005 the company managed 150 dialysis clinics worldwide. Gambro was founded in Lund, Sweden in 1964 soon after the first artificial kidney was invented by Holger Crafoord who felt he had to "develop and market this life saving innovation". It commenced its international expansion in the 1970s and was publicly listed in 1983.
